Interview:
Someone Who Actually Caught 'Em All

8/5/2016

If you've ever even heard of Pokemon, you'll know that the series' tagline has been "Gotta Catch 'Em All" since it was first created 20 years ago. However as more and more Pokemon are created every few years, to most people that signature sentence is just another meaningless phrase. Recently, a guy I know completed the amazing feat of collecting all 721 different species of Pokemon! With Pokemon fresh in everyone's heads with the recent release of Pokemon GO and announcement of Pokemon Sun & Moon, I though it would be a great idea to interview him on his complete Pokedex. The interview was granted, so without further ado, let's begin!

How does it feel to have a complete Pokedex?

It feels great! Been playing Pokemon for like 20 years and it's the first time I've ever done it! It's a great, feeling something I'd never thought I'd get to honestly.

When did you decide to try this? Had you been transferring Pokemon from previous games already, or did you start from scratch?

I started transferring everything from HG/Black/White 2 to Y when they opened Pokebank; which was actually a lot. I never thought about it then out of the blue I just decided that it would be a fun thing to try. Then it turned into Vivillon patterns and Unown alphabet and alt forms.

What were some of the hardest Pokemon to catch or acquire and why?

The legendaries, definitely. I had missed a lot of events for them, so there were some I never expected to get.

Out of all 721 Pokemon, which is your favorite? If that's too hard of a question to answer, then what is your favorite from each gen?

It's not, Elekid is my favorite.
Gen1: Electabuzz
Gen2: Elekid
Gen3: Sharpedo
Gen4: Electivire
Gen5: Sigilyph
Gen6: Pyroar
Gen7: Mimikyu from what we've seen.

Have you gotten in on this recent Pokemon GO craze, or does catching Pokemon that way not interest you?

I've tried it, but it's not really my thing. There isn't a whole lot to do in my area anyways. I'd rather just spend that time playing one of the handheld games.

Speaking of the handheld games, are you going to get Sun or Moon when they come out later this year; and will you catch all of the new 'mon to maintain a perfect Pokedex?

I am absolutely getting one. The plan is to Pokebank everything over to keep the perfect dex.

So there you have it! Everyone be sure to give a digital round of applause to him for completing this feat and allowing me to interview him on it! (You can tweet him @SpinelessOyster, whatever the heck that means). Whether you prefer the Game Boy originals or are in love with the Pokemon GO, now that you've seen it is indeed possible, why don't you go out there and try to Catch 'Em All yourself?
